Buckingham Town 5-3 Whitworths

So the order of the day after a nightmare on Tuesday was to tighten up, play the percentages and hope for a quiet, uneventful close game which we try and nick 1-0 late on, not quite how it went in the end but then again we are Buckingham Town.

I tweaked it a bit yesterday and I must say there were a few raised eyebrows when I announced Carl Knox on pitch in the starting 11, I think the lads were waiting for the men in white coats to come and take me away.  Knoxy was actually involved in one of my favourite bits of the match, not his well taken goal or even the celebration but the sliding tackle where he won the ball and knocked over one of their players, one of our players (his mate aswell!) and narrowly missed the linesman, this epitomised the desire that ran through the whole side yesterday.

I was very disappointed to concede so early again, especially knowing what normally happens next (shipping 5 or 6 goals) and  having lined up a bit more defensively, we cannot afford to keep going
0-1 down inside the first 5 minutes.  Fortunately Demarlo Smith crashed in a left foot drive and Carl Knox headed in from a quality Ben Shepherd cross to put us 2-1 up at the break.

The second half was packed full of incident and the scoring went 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3 then 5-3 as we finally did enough to win, Demarlo raced away from the defence to add his second and Drew Mitten scored a cheeky chip before grabbing his second after pressurising their keeper into a bad mistake.

The score was already 5-3 when things turned a bit ugly, with about 8 minutes left we were defending a corner when a scuffle broke out in the box which seemed to take forever to sort out.  I obviously cannot condone violent conduct but Matt Bines saw red for defending a team mate who had (allegedly) been struck 3 times by an opponent right in front of him, it's difficult to criticise his actions because it was a human reaction to help a team mate and in some respects this is commendable.  Whitworths had two sent off also and we saw the game out.

We had a good team spirit yesterday and everyone chipped in all the way to the end, we were also a lot more ruthless in front of goal than we have been previously, goals win games!

Thanks to the supporters who came yesterday, it was nice to see so many familiar faces and hopefully see you all there on Wednesday night.
